My father understands and speaks about 6 languages: Igbo, English, Pidgin English, Hausa, Yoruba and a little bit of Chinese.

He’s a polyglot. I’m not. When I think about languages, I’m ashamed of myself. I wish I could cut off his tongue and do a merger with mine but tongues don’t do business corporations.

Frankly, I could do better but I’m not. Deep down somewhere, my inner self tells me, “Dude, you can learn lots of languages. You’ve got the tongue for that.”

Yet, I’ve lived in Lagos, Nigeria for almost two decades, but don’t understand or speak 99.8% Yoruba. Perhaps because where I’ve lived is Igbo-dominated. I should just leave everyone here and travel to a multi-ethnic society. No, I shouldn’t. I will. Pretty soonest.

In primary school, I had a crush on French. I still do. I find French romantic. I’m learning her this year. I can’t have an advanced crush and not learn the lady I’m crushing on.

In 2002, I learnt Arabic a little bit before being whisked to boarding school. Memory lane still affords me a ride to how my Arabic teacher looked with a traditional cap decked on his average-sized head; another ride to some alphabets pronounced as Alif, Hamza, Ba, Tha, bla bla bla.

Arabic is why I spent my senior years in secondary school, my university days and present days writing from the back of my book. I dared not submit those notes, so, technically, I had no notes in senior secondary and the university.

Notebook tyranny.

I hope Bank Of Deposits and other books I’m writing aren’t written from the back.

In 2010/2011, Confucius Institute came to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka – a language in shining characters. I was one of the students who sacrificed time and curiosity to go see the Chinese and make inquiries. I’d have been a pro today but I ran away – money or time, I can’t remember which drew me away. Whenever I remember, I’m peeved at my 2010/2011 self.

Last year, I took on writing on a daily: 298 posts later… hehehe.

This year, I’m attempting two new things:
1) Learning French.

2) Learning something else – I’ll tell you what next week.

So, French. I need help with that. I can translate some words I see but I can’t do convos with it or write sentences. I’ve had a bit of research on sources I could learn from but can’t settle for this or that because I don’t want to invest without knowing to an extent that this is it.
If you know any source where I could learn French or if you’ve got a friend who understands and speaks and reads and writes well – in French – help me achieve this dream. Preferably paid so that I won’t joke with it.

Help me share this.

S’il vous plait? Merci.
