“From experience, I’ve gleaned knowledge that our discipline meter works on two frontiers: time-based and quota-based.
The time-based focuses on the unit of time as a yardstick for measurement, “I’ll promote my posts on Twitter for an hour every day.”
The quota-based focuses on the amount/quantity, “I’ll read fifty pages of a novel every day.”
Oftentimes, it’s good to merge both for a task.
For reading, I use quota-based so that I won’t hurriedly read through and forget all I’ve read; for writing, I use time-based so that I don’t get to be fixated on word count and churn out fluff and nonsense.
So it’s more a personal choice to know when to use time-based or quota-based yardstick or both for getting disciplined on a task.”
